In a letter, dated February 6 to district education officer and school and college principals, the collector, JK Jain has said that sensing the need for displaying veneration by students and the youth towards parents, February 14 should be commemorated as ‘matra-pitra pujya diwas’ across the district.
The letter does not mention February 14 being Valentine’s Day or any specific reason why the date was chosen for celebrating it as a day for showing respect towards parents. The collector has instructed officials to make sure that the day is celebrated across schools and social organizations in a big way.

Incidentally, there is no bar on using Valentine’s day as an occasion to profess love for parents. In fact parents and children both are now a target group by companies selling Valentine’s day merchandise.
